Carmen at Theater La Fenice

A modernized Carmen by Bieito

This year Georges Bizet’s masterpiece, Carmen, will return to the La Fenice in Venice, conducted by Diego Matheuz with the direction of Calixto Bieito, who modernized the opera and set in a contemporaney framwork, transporting the action in the 70’s of the 20th century, in a barracks on the border between Spain and Marocco.

In this wild and inhospitable context, the irresistible and enchanting gispy Carmen seduces Don José, a soldier who falls in love with her and gives up everything, abandoning his post.

But his jealousy with regard to Carmen and her relationship with the bullfighter Escamillo will torment him until he kills Carmen, guilty of having pursued her dream of indipendence. In 2011 Bieto’s Carmen has won the prestigious “Franco Abbiati” prize for the best direction.

The opera will be performed on September 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 29 and on October 16, 18, 26.
