Arsenal

Arsenal

The Arsenal of Venice has been for a longtime the biggest shipyard in the world.
Founded in XII century and enlarged between XIV and XVI, it constituted the basis of the maritime power of Venice: more than 16,000 people at the same time are estimated to have been working in it, building and repairing Venetian military and commercial ships.

The efficient organization of work in the Arsenal of Venice guaranteed to the Serenissima Republic the supremacy on the Mediterranean sea for a very longtime, until its gradual dismantling after the Napoleon.

Nowadays, a large part of the Arsenal of Venice is still a military area, while a few spaces are instead used for exhibitions and as venues for shows of the Biennale.
