Bovolo Staircase
A spiral shaped tower
Bovolo Staircase is probably the most famous staircase on Venice: a cylindrical tower with open arcs, certainly the most surprising architectonical element on the facade of Contarini palace.
Inspired by Oriental architectures, Bovolo staircase was named after bovolo, the Venetian word for snail, clearly referring to its original spiral shape.
Bovolo Staircase (Scala Contarini del Bovolo) may be a little bit hard to find but it is actually only a few steps away from Campo Manin in Saint Mark district. Vaporetto stops: Rialto or Sant’Angelo.
