Bridge of Sighs

Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs is one of the most famous landmarks of Venice.
However, its romantic name has nothing to do with love affairs: being this covered bridge the connection between the Doge’s Palace (the site of the government of Venice, including its tribunals) and the Piombi palace (the prisons), the name Bridge of Sighs rather refers to the sighs of the people condemned to be jailed and brought directly from the court to the darkness of the Piombi.

Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) is visible from the Ponte della Paglia, at the beginning of the Riva degli Schiavoni in front of Saint Mark’s Basin, but it can be visited only from the Doge’s Palace.
