San Giobbe (Church)

Othello's grave

San Giobbe church in Venice was established in 1378 as an oratory and hospice for poor people; it was only in 1450 that the construction of the today’s church was started, after a visit in Venice of the charismatic friar Bernardino da Siena in 1443. The works were completed by Lombardo, who made San Giobbe church one of earliest exemples of Renaissance architecture in Venice. Paintings by Bellini, Carpaccio and Basaiti are now exposed in the Gallerie dell’Accademia museum, to which they have been returned after Napoleon stole them during the occupation of Venice.
Doge Cristoforo Moro is buried in San Giobbe church together with his wife Cristina Sanudo; Moro, governor of Cyprus, is identified by some as the man who inspired Shekespeare’s Othello.
