Santa Maria del Giglio (Church)

Mxing sacred and profane

Santa Maria del Giglio church is also known as Santa Maria Zobenigo, due to the corruption of the name of Jubanico family (of Slavic origin), who had built the first building in IX century.
Like other few churches, its facade is on a street, not facing the homonym campo. However, the facade is a bright exemple of Baroc style in Venice, designed in XVII century by Sardi under precise instructions by Antonio Barbaro, a military leader who paid for it.
Barbaro himself is represented, together with his four brothers, on the facade of Santa Maria Zobenigo, while at the lowest levels there are city plans of places where he had fought (and won) such as Zara, Crete, Padua, Rome, Corfu and Split.

Santa Maria del Giglio square is located in the middle between San Maurizio square and Calle Larga XXII Marzo.
