Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica)

Amazing Baroque style in the Salute Basilica

Santa Maria della Salute church - or just Salute basilica – was built after the terrible epidemic of plague of 1629-1630, which killed about a third of Venice population. Santa Maria della Salute means indeed Saint Mary of Health, cause the Senate vowed to dedicate a new church to the Virgin, to whom it had asked the liberation of the city.
It famous Baroque facade by Longhena is a triumph of statues and decorations, topped by a dome, while the interior, although simpler than the outside, is rich in art, mostly by Tintoretto, Titian and other Ventian masters.
Salute basilica has an original octagonal plant and it is also characterized by a strong Marian symbolism.

Santa Maria della Salute, a landmark and a symbol of Venice, is located on the edge of Dorsoduro, marking the entrance to Grand Canal from Saint Mark basin.
