Santa Maria di Nazareth / degli Scalzi (Church)
An unlucky location
Santa Maria di Nazareth church in Venice was founded by Barefoot Carmelites friars and finished in 1689. The baroque facade, thought still ordered and armonious, was designed by Longhena.
Even known as Scalzi church due to its proximity to the Scalzi bridge, the church is located just beside the railway station.
Such an unlucky position of Scalzi church caused the annexed convent to be destroyed in order to build the station, while an Austrian bombing in 1915 even caused damages to the church itself: the Tiepolo’s ceiling was destroyed, and fragments of it are now in the Gallerie dell’Accademia museum. Today, the constant crowds of travellers and passers-by could make admiring its beautiful facade a quite difficult task.
