Scuola Grande della Misericordia, by Sansovino, should have been the most impressive scuola of the town in the mind of its creator – in the mid XVI century, scuole were competing, even in the size and splendour of their buildings.
In the case of Scuola della Misericordia, the main hall on the first floor could have competed even with the Maggior Consiglio hall in the Doge’s Palace, but the building remained unfinished, and was later used for a variety of different uses during French and Austrian occupations. In the recent years it was a basketball gym, and then went through restoration.
