Venice Ghetto

Getting to know the Jewish history in Venice Ghetto

The ghetto of Venice can be considered the first ghetto in history: established in 1516 by the government of the Republic of Venice as the mandatory residence of Venetian Jews, the Venice ghetto is located in the district of Cannaregio, only 10 minutes from the railway station. Venetian ghetto shows today the signs of the complex history of Venetian Jews, and of Jewish history in general: this tiny area hosts five synagogues, cause each one was used by Jews coming from different areas of Europe and Mediteranean. Diaspora left its mark on the food, too: in the ghetto of Venice it is possible to buy Kosher sweets from the Jewish Venetian tradition. There are also two Kosher restaurants.
