Toponymy of Venice

The toponymy of Venice for beginners

Finding your way in this town may be quite complicated unless you are not aware of the original toponymy of Venice: street names are not usually mentioned in official addresses, instead only the name of the sestiere (the six neighnourhoods of Venice) and the number are indicated.
This is probably the most surprising characteristic of Venice toponymy, because the search of the right number would theoretically require the visitor to walk in all the calli of that sestiere. However, a help comes by the indication of the nearest campo, canale or fondamenta.
In the toponymy of Venice, a campo is a square and a fondamenta is a street facing a canal.
