Palio Repubbliche Marinare

Remembering Italian Maritime republics

The Palio delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare celebrates the ancient glories of the so-called Italian Maritime Republics: Venice, Pisa, Genua and Amalfi. Once fighting one against the other for the supremacy on the Mediterranean sea, the four cities still continue to compete nowadays in this event, held every year in one of the four towns. The Palio delle Repubbliche Marinare was born in 1955, and it is open by a procession where each of the cities commemorates the main events of its past history.
