Cannaregio (sestiere)

Much more than just the way to Saint Mark

You may start discovering Venice neighbourhoods fromĀ Cannaregio, the first sestiere where you will find yourself if you are planning to arrive here by train: the Venice railway station is in this area, because right here it was built the railway bridge that connects Venice to its mainland since the XIX century.
Located on the North-Western side of the town, Cannaregio is the most populated district of Venice. It is vertically cut by the Canal di Cannaregio, the only canal, apart from the Grand Canal, where the vaporetti, the public transportation boat, can navigate. From the station, you will be able to easily reach Rialto bridge by walking along the Strada Nova, the main road of Cannaregio district. However, we suggest you to get away from it in order to find quiet corners and historical areas worth a visit, such as the Jewish Ghetto or the Fondamenta Nove on the Northern side of the city: Cannaregio and Venice have plenty of breathtaking sights to offer the patient visitor.
