Castello (sestiere)

A special place for contemporary art lovers

The large district of Castello is commonly considered the most popular among the sestieri of Venice. The large extension of Castello neighbourhood makes so that it is located in the heart of the city, just behind Saint Mark square, and at the same time it reaches the extreme Eastern part of Venice. Among the points of interest in the sestiere of Castello, it is worth to mention the huge Church of San Giovanni e Paolo, the Arsenale – the ancient ship building area – and, of course, the so-called Gardens. The Giardini di Castello are home to the world-famous Biennale of Art, a part of which is instead located in the Arsenale area. We then may say that nowadays the ancient Castello district makes itself a name in the world of contemporary art.
