San Polo (sestiere)

In the hearth of Venice

The central neighbourhood of San Polo includes the area of the Rialto bridge and market and also what it is believed to be the oldest church of Venice, the church of San Giacomo (popularly known as San Giacometto in order to distinguish it from the one on campo San Giacomo dall’Orio). San Polo district is also home to the huge Basilica dei Frari, which hosts the famous painting The Assumption of the Virgin by Titian, and the grave of Titian himself.
Apart from Rialto area, most of the sestiere of San Polo is not overcrowded with tourists and thus offers several itineraries to people willing to discover its tresures of art while at the same time enjoying a walk in the genuine Venice. Venetians themselves enjoy spending summer evenings in campo San Polo, where an open air cinema is hold from July until September during the film festival.
