San Francesco del Deserto

How to visit San Francesco del Deserto island in Venice

The island of the  San Francesco del Deserto is a minor island located in the Venetian lagoon, between the islands of Burano and Sant’Erasmo. The name San Francesco del Deserto remembers us that this island was visited by the Saint on his way back from pilgrimage in the Holy Land. The owner of the island, a noble man, gave it as a gift to Franciscan Order in 1233.
The island of San Francesco del Deserto is open to visitors, but previous agreement must be taken with the friars of the convent by phone. There are no direct connections by public boat, therefore it will be necessary to reach Burano and then ask the friars to send there a boat to pick up visitors. If you plan to visit San francesco del Deserto, make sure you dress appropriately, or access may be denied to you.
