Traditional Recipes

The traditional meal in Venice

Venice traditional recipes included one or more of the following ingredients: polenta, rice, beans and baccalà (dried codfish). After centuries, Venetian dishes still include these ingredients, combined with fish or meat.

Fishes are mostly lagoon fishes, such as sardines, eels, seafoods and moscardini, while among meat recipes the main dish is certainly the fegato alla veneziana (Venetian style liver).

A special place in Venetian traditional recipes is occupied by onions, garlic and obviously by spices, which started to be imported from Asia in Middle Age by Venetian merchants.

A traditional meal in Venice may end with sweet wine and cookies, such as bussolai buranei.
