Greek Icons Museum
Greek Icons in Venice
Greek Icons Museum of Venice is housed in the old building of the Scuola dei Greci, near to the church of San Giorgio dei Greci in the district of Castello.
This part of the town was the centre of the cultural life of the numerous Greek community of Venice; they were merchants but also refugees who had arrived after the Turkish conquest of Constantinople in 1453.
Many of refugees brought to Venice religious icons, books and sacred objects which are today conserved in the Icons Museum of Venice. Others were indeed manufactured in Venice in the following years, so that the Greek Icons Museum reveals today the evolution of Greek art in Venice.
