San Cassiano (Church)

Nice in the interior.Artworks by Tintoretto

San Cassiano church in Venice may look quite anonymous from the outside, due to restaurations and partial rebuilts which resulted in the demolition of the outside porch and in the subsequent lack of coherence in the facade.
The interior however is appreciable thanks to artworks by Tintoretto and others. A painting by Balestra shows the martyrdom of San Cassiano, a teacher killed by his own students with their pens. San Cassiano is the patron saint of school teachers.

Campo San Cassiano was also the site of the first public opera house in the world, built in 1637 and demolished in 1812.
