San Giacomo Dall’Orio (Church)

One of the most ancient churches in Venice

San Giacomo dall’Orio church was named after Orio family, or maybe after a lauro (bay three) which was growing here when the church was built in X or XI century.
San Giacomo dell’Orio was rebuilt in the following centuries, altough it remains one of the oldest and most valuable churches of Venice. It is dedicated to Saint James, whose portrait is visible over the main door.
The interior features paintings by Lotto, Veronese and Palma il Giovane, and a green column which is reported to have been stolen from Constantinople in XIII century.

The church is located in the romantic and quite Campo San Giacomo dall’Orio, in Santa Croce district.
