Santa Maria dei Derelitti (Church)
An impressive Baroque facade
Santa Maria dei Derelitti church in Venice is also known as Ospedaletto church, because it was part of one of the four ospedali that housed orphans and poor, sick, elder people. Orphan girls trained in music and singing were performing here, just like in the famous church of La Pietà.
In early XIV century, this complex became a retirement home. It now belongs to IRE, a public institute for social housing.
The amazing Baroque facade of the Ospedaletto church was designed by Longhena and features the portrait of Cargnoni, a wealthy merchant who had paid for part of the works.
Santa Maria dei Derelitti church is located in Barbaria delle Tole, an alley just behind the basilica of San Giovanni e Paolo
