Venetian dialect

A bilingual city

Venetian dialect is the local language spoken in Venice. Veneto is instead the regional dialect of the whole region, and therefore includes the dialects of various cities.
As in all Italian regions, many people may be considered bilingual speakers, as they can perfectly speak Italian and their native dialect, too – depending on the context. In the case of Venice dialect, the use of dialect is still quite popular, as it is spoken not only with family members or close friends, but also in many other social interactions.
Furthermore, many things are named in Venetian dialect, such as the streets: most street names are written in Venice dialect, while others are named in both Italian and Venetian.
Goldoni, the famous playwright, also used Venetian dialect in his comedies.
